I have been interested in the principles of non-violent communication (NVC) for a long time. NVC has been adopted by Fortune 500 companies, government offices, schools, mediation centers, university communication programs, and peace and social change advocates, among others. So I will facilitate classes on NVC at our congregation on Tuesday nights, Feb. 10, 17, and 24, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
In these classes, we will begin to focus on connection through empathic listening, rather than being right or getting what we want. We will learn to defuse anger and frustration peacefully and transform conflict into mutually satisfying outcomes. We will learn to communicate in ways that create relationships grounded in mutual respect, compassion, and emotional safety. We will learn to move beyond power struggles to cooperation and trust. And we will develop our skills through stories, real-world examples, and conversation role-plays.
I hope that I am not alone in wanting to improve my relationships with others by using NVC. So I'm extending this invitation to every church member. I hope that many of you will join me for our first class on Feb. 10 at 6:30.
